Medical Education
Dr. Canady earned her medical degree from the University of Michigan School of Medicine, Ann Arbor, Michigan. She completed her surgical internship at Yale University-New Haven Hospital. She completed her neurosurgical residency at the University of Minnesota Hospitals followed by fellowship training in pediatric neurosurgery at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Profile
Dr. Canady was the first African-American woman in the United States to become a neurosurgeon. She is a consultant to the Food and Drug Administration and chairman of the Neurological Devices Panel of the FDA's Medical Devices Advisory Committee. From 1987 to 2001, she was chief of neurosurgery at Children's Hospital of Michigan.
