Hospital Inpatient Pharmacy
The Department of Pharmacy at Sacred Heart Hospital includes a staff of approximately 60 pharmacists, technicians, and support personnel. The department consists of a central inpatient distribution pharmacy and several pharmacy satellites. Progressive clinical services are offered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with each member of the staff holding the care of patient at the forefront of what they do.
Pharmacy services are comprised of a computerized unit dose drug distribution system supported by the McKesson Rx Robot and AcuDose automated cabinets, and complete IV admixture services are available to the inpatient units and outpatient clinics for all infusion needs. Advanced technology allows the department to streamline drug distribution activities within the hospital and gives our pharmacists more opportunity to focus on other patient care responsibilities.
Sacred Heart’s pharmacists are well respected members of the healthcare team and work daily with other healthcare professionals to optimize patient’s medication therapies. Specialty focus areas of the pharmacists include critical care, pediatrics, oncology, and nutrition. The pharmacists are actively involved with patient care activities including:
- Pharmacokinetics monitoring
- Renal dosing and IV to PO conversions
- Anticoagulation monitoring
- Parenteral nutritional ordering and management
- Drug information services
- Multi-disciplinary teaching rounds
 Centered on the most up to date medication management guidelines, the pharmacy is always striving to add new technology and enhance the clinical expertise of our staff members. The hospital supports the pharmacy as an essential part of the health care team and looks to pharmacists for guidance on many medication issues. The department collaborates with the medical and nursing staff in various committees including Pharmacy and Therapeutics, Medication Safety, and Pharmacy-Nursing Workgroup.
Sacred Heart Hospital’s Pharmacy Department offers a comprehensive educational program including affiliations with multiple schools of pharmacy for undergraduate clinical rotations. The pharmacy department also sponsors a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency with two positions, one emphasizing in pediatric medicine and the other in adult medicine. Teaching opportunities exist for pharmacy students and residents, as well as nurses, physicians, and medical residents in training.
