Intensive Care Nursery
Visiting Information & Hours - Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital NICU staff has a strong commitment
to family-centered care and has visiting guidelines that support family involvement. These
guidelines recognize and respect the role of families in the lives of their infants.
Your baby’s medical needs and family’s emotional needs are very important to us. There are
times, however, when your baby’s medical needs must take priority over family
needs. We have detailed the following visiting guidelines to help us blend these two
extremely important priorities.
1. Only Parents and Immediate Grandparents (4 ONLY) may visit. Names of the 4 grandparents must be provided by parents prior to grandparents being allowed to
visit.
2. Parents must call on the phone located outside the NICU to ask the Nurse if it is okay
to visit (we may ask you to wait a period of time because of procedures occurring in
the nursery).
3. ALL Visitors must remove their jewelry and wash their hands according to the Hand
Washing Technique posted above scrub sinks at the entrance to the unit.
4. Parents and Grandparents will be required to wear a mask in the Nursery when they
visit. (Parents can discontinue masking after culture results are confirmed negative.)
5. Only 2 Visitors per baby are allowed to enter the NICU at a time. All other visitors will
be asked to wait outside the NICU.
6. For safety reasons, Parents and Grandparents are not allowed to visit at another
baby’s bedside.
7. Parents are required to wear their ID Band until the day of
discharge.
VISITING HOURS
8:00 AM - 10:00 AM 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM
11:00 AM - 1:00 PM 11:00 PM - 1:00 AM
2:00 PM - 6:00 PM 2:00 AM - 6:00 AM
We recognize that your baby will heal and grow best in a quiet environment so we have planned Quiet Time every shift.
Your baby’s nurse may also ask you to leave the unit during a neighboring baby’s
admission or emergency situation, or if another baby in the same room will be having a
procedure performed.
While your infant is critical, the amount of care you are able to provide to him/her may be
minimal, but we will try in every way to involve you as much as possible. As your baby’s
condition improves, you will be able to do more for him/her (including holding, diaper
changes, feeding, bathing, etc.). Your nurse will encourage you to take ‘breaks’ away from
the unit. It is very important for both you and your baby for you to continue to take good
care of yourself, and taking time away from the unit is part of this self-care.
