Ann L. Baroco Center for Breast Health
Early detection is a woman's best defense against serious illness. The Ann L. Baroco Center for Breast Health provides on-site breast cancer screenings, evaluation and counseling. From support groups and state-of-the-art imaging to the latest biopsy techniques and treatments, patients receive the very best of care.
Breast cancer will strike an estimated 1 in 8 women in their lifetimes and new technologies are helping to detect and treat breast cancer earlier and more effectively, greatly increasing the likelihood of recovery. The Ann L. Baroco Center uses a digital mammography system that provides excellent results for women who are good candidates for this exam, such as women who have dense breast tissue. Digital mammography images are clearer, easier to read, and provide better visibility near the skin line and chest wall and in women with dense breast tissue. The digital mammogram is faster, and if a second opinion is needed, the image can be sent electronically to a second doctor and can then be printed on film for review.

When a woman or her physician discovers a lump in her breast, rather than having to simply watch and wait or have surgery performed, there is another option at Sacred Heart -- the Mammotest. The Mammotest stereotactic breast biopsy procedure is a safe and fast way to obtain a tissue sample needed to check out the abnormality. The procedure can be done in the doctor's office; it requires only a local anesthetic and about an hour of the patient's time. About 80 percent of abnormal tissue in the breast turns out to be benign and pose no health risk. Mammotest allows women to have peace of mind and the information they need sooner to make the best health decisions possible.
Mammography - a low-dose x-ray of the breast- has proven to be the most effective way to detect breast cancer early. The American Cancer Society recommends annual mammograms for women over the age of 40. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death for American women (lung cancer is first). Survival rates are good if the cancer is detected and treated before it has a chance to spread - 95 percent of women survive past the five-year mark.
Sacred Heart is proud to offer the ImageChecker, a computer-aided detection system that provides an electronic "second opinion" of mammograms. The ImageChecker reads and analyzes the films and marks suspicious areas that may be associated with cancer. This assists radiologists by flagging areas on a mammogram that may warrant additional evaluation.
Sacred Heart also offers women access to the latest in cancer treatment options. To learn more, please visit the Cancer Research section of our Web site.
