Goggles Comfort Children During MRI

Posted: 9/11/2018

During an MRI test, 12-year-old Chloe watches the movie Enchanted using new Cinemavision goggles at Sacred Heart Hospital Pensacola and The Studer Family Children’s Hospital. Watching over her are MRI technologists Andy Anderson and Kelly Carson.

PENSACOLA, Fla. — MRI scans are now a smoother, more comfortable experience for patients of The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart, thanks to two new pairs of MRI Cinemavision goggles.

During an MRI, the goggles enable children to watch DVDs or broadcast television, as well as listen to music through internet radio or an MP3 player. Becoming completely absorbed in entertainment decreases anxiety and reduces the need for sedation, particularly in younger children who have a hard time sitting still.

“In addition to a more comfortable patient experience, the MRI goggles have helped improve our patient care,” said Brianna Perdue, lead MRI technologist of Sacred Heart Hospital Pensacola. “By encouraging kids to lie still, MRI goggles improve the scan quality, which ultimately leads to clearer test results and more accurate diagnoses.

Goggles can also be used by special request to comfort adult patients suffering from claustrophobia or PTSD.

MRI goggles are currently offered at Airport Medical Park, Sacred Heart Hospital Pensacola and The Children’s Hospital, both on an inpatient and outpatient basis. For outpatient tests, the MRI goggles can be requested at the time of scheduling. During a hospital stay, patients needing an MRI can request the goggles from their doctor, nurse or MRI technologist.
